ARKANSAS BASKETBALL: Weems Has Rough Night After Career Day

ATHENS, Ga. -- Sonny Weems caught a pass on the perimeter, drove baseline with a burst of energy and attacked the basket.

But the Arkansas forward didn't get far.

Georgia center Albert Jackson blocked Weems' shot in the lane, offering a glimpse of how the senior's night went.

Weems, who had established himself as Arkansas' top scoring option over the past few games, had a difficult time getting his shot to fall during Saturday's sloppy 82-69 loss at Georgia.

"Not every night is he going to shoot the percentage he's been shooting," Arkansas center Steven Hill said. "At the same time, the Georgia defenders put a lot of pressure on the guards and they put two or three guys on him the whole time.

"He wasn't able to do some things."

Weems, who didn't speak with reporters afterward, missed 8-of-12 shots and was held to just two points in the first half.

He finished with 12 points, but 10 of those points came in the final minutes when the Razorbacks were already trailing by double digits.

It was an off-night for the forward, who scored a career-high 28 points in Wednesday's 70-66 loss to South Carolina in Bud Walton Arena.

"I think it's very difficult to score 28 every single night, and yeah, (teams) are going to pay attention to him," Arkansas coach John Pelphrey said. "He still had 12 attempts, which is a big number. ... But I thought Georgia did a nice job on him."

Weems didn't score his first points of the second half until he sank a pair of free throws that cut Georgia's lead to 67-53 with six minutes, 23 seconds remaining.

The senior, however, helped Arkansas keep one of its records intact.

His 3-pointer with 3:10 left was the Razorbacks' first of the night. The basket ensured that Arkansas would extend its streak of making at least one 3-pointer to 629 consecutive games.

Weems hit another 3-pointer less than two minutes later, allowing Arkansas to shoot just 2-of-11 from long range.

Hit In The Mouth

Arkansas guard Patrick Beverley hurt his already sore mouth midway through the second half, but it wasn't his jaw this time.

Arkansas athletic trainer Dave England said Beverley split his lip after apparently getting hit in the mouth at around the 11:50 mark in the second half.

But England said the sophomore didn't re-injure his jaw, which was dislocated in the first half of a 71-67 overtime win over Alabama on Jan. 13.

Beverley could be seen holding a towel to his lip and rinsing his mouth out with water. But he returned to the lineup with Arkansas trailing 62-49 with 8:58 left, finishing with nine points and five rebounds.

Pelphrey downplayed the injury when asked if it had any effect on Beverley's performance.

"That was late, no problems with the jaw," Pelphrey said. "He's fine."

Empty House

Perhaps it was the snow flurries and cold rain that hit Atlanta and parts of Georgia on Saturday, but the Bulldogs had a noticeably small turnout for Saturday's game.

Georgia had been averaging only 7,371 fans for home games this season, but there was maybe 5,000 fans in Stegeman Coliseum by tip-off.

The attendance was announced at 8,322, though that number appears inflated considering the number of empty rows of seats on Saturday night.

Rare Appearance

Arkansas forward Vincent Hunter has spent much of the season on the bench. But in a rare appearance Saturday night, the senior played two minutes toward the end of the first half.

Hunter, who hadn't played in any of Arkansas' past three games, entered the lineup with the Razorbacks trailing 26-24 with around 4:20 remaining in the first half.

The senior was replaced after only a few possessions, but he returned to play the final 1:17 before halftime.

Hunter, who had played only 76 minutes in the first 17 games of the season, also saw some action in the final minutes of the loss.

He made a pair of free throws with 2:06 remaining to finish with two points in four minutes of action.

" Well, it seems that the Hogs still have some work to do and they are not
championship caliber as of yet. Maybe next year.
Another diappointing season is in our midst. Tired of the same ole loss after loss. "
