FAYETTEVILLE - As he rounded first base following his game-clinching, two-run home run in the sixth inning Saturday at Baum Stadium, Aaron Murphree gave an emphatic pump of the fist.
For the senior Arkansas Razorback, it was a long overdue moment.
After a season spent mainly watching from the bench, the second-year Hog is finally getting his chance in 2008. And Saturday in front of a crowd of 1,742 fans, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound designated hitter delivered the knockout blow in a 5-4 Arkansas win against Wright State.
"It's been exciting so far," Murphree said. "I've played in both games, so I've just got to keep coming out here, working hard and see where it goes."
For the second game in a row, the Razorbacks (2-0) fell behind early against Wright State. But just like Friday, Arkansas relied on a strong performance from the bullpen and a big swing of the bat to pull off the win against the Raiders (0-2).
"I think our bullpen did a great job today," Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said. "Shaun (Seibert) had some good hitters in one good inning. He showed some signs and again, he got that over with and I'm sure he'll be better next time. He was disappointed I could tell, but we overcame it.
"We had a chance to put together a big inning and we only scored one run. And a lot of times when you can fight through that and still win the game, that was big for us. We just got a couple of big hits. A couple of younger guys got going a little bit. Then Murphree absolutely crushed that ball to the opposite field and then the bullpen took over and really did a good job."
Making his first start on the mound since March 11 due to Tommy John surgery, Seibert lasted just 2 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits. But once again, the Arkansas bullpen was there to bail out another Razorbacks starter in this series.
This time, it was Baylor transfer Cliff Springston, sophomore Mike Bolsinger and closer Travis Hill combining to close out Wright State.
And then, there was Murphree's big blast which just cleared the right field wall like a laser to put Arkansas on top, 5-4 in the sixth.
"Oh man, it was exciting," Murphree said. "A close game, I got a good pitch and I just got a little excited.
"It's an awesome feeling. These are all my guys. We come out here every day and anything I can do to contribute. It's a team-effort and to get a win, it's exciting."
Arkansas and Wright State close out the three-game set at 12:05 p.m. today. Freshman Kendal Korbel takes the mound for the Razorbacks, with Michael Meintel getting the ball for the Raiders.
