FAYETTEVILLE - Aaron Murphree is on the tear of a lifetime.

Entering Friday's Arkansas-Siena baseball game with seven home runs, Murphree couldn't possibly get any hotter at the plate. But he did.

Murphree added three more home runs to his remarkable total to begin the year. And all teammates, opponents and 673 fans in Baum Stadium could do was sit back and watch in amazement as an incredible hot streak at the plate continued in a 14-5 Arkansas win.

"Unbelievable," Razorbacks coach Dave Van Horn said. "That last one (Aaron) hit out, it would have went out against the wind. And it's one of those things, he's confident, he's putting good swings on it and he's hitting it the right way when the wind is blowing a certain way.

"I mean the first one he hit, it blew out of the park. Then the second one he hit, it didn't matter. But what I really like is he took that walk. He's got all these fans jumping up and the team is going crazy and he took that walk with two outs and then we score two runs. And I told him if they want to walk you four or five times a game, we can score four or five runs."

But taking free passes wasn't Murphree's specialty Friday. With the wind howling out to right field, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound senior designated hitter came up in the first inning in a 2-2 game and hit a towering shot that just cleared the center field wall. Then in the bottom of the third, Murphree sent another blast to dead center to put the Diamond Hogs (9-1) ahead, 6-2.

That gave the Weatherford, Texas senior numbers eight and nine. But he wasn't done yet.

Leading off the bottom of the eighth, Murphree saved the best for last. On the first pitch he saw from Siena (1-7) relief pitcher Maikel Hurtado, Murphree crushed a ball over the green wall past center field, some 485 feet away from home plate.

The last shot - and for that matter, his entire day - left Murphree's buddies in awe.

"I keep watching him hit and when he hits one, I'm like 'Are you serious?' I mean he's hitting three home runs a game, it's crazy," second basemen Ben Tschepikow said. "But it's so much fun to watch and I know he's just got so much confidence and I know he's going to carry it through the whole year.

"He's just fun to watch right now."

Through it all, Murphree - who now has eight home runs in his last four games - continues to keep up his 'aw shucks' attitude about the whole situation. And even though he's on pace to shatter records, this big-swinging Texan is taking it all in stride.

"Yeah, it's been a little bit surprising," Murphree said. "I've been fortunate enough to work my way into some good counts and I've got some good pitches to hit.

"I've just been putting OK swings on stuff and it's been working out OK for me so far."
