FAYETTEVILLE - A Benton County inmate claims he's wasted away from 413 pounds to 308 in the eight months he's been in jail and he's making a federal case out of it.

Broderick Lloyd Laswell filed a prisoner civil rights lawsuit, without a lawyer, Friday in U.S. District Court in Fayetteville. He claims the jail doesn't provide inmates with enough food.

"On several occasions I have started to do some exercising and my vision went blurry and I felt like I was going to pass out," Laswell wrote in his complaint. "About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again."

    Laswell claims he's lost about a half-pound a day.

"If we are in a small pod all day do next to nothing for physical exercise we should not lose weight," according to Laswell. "The only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally are being starved to death."

Laswell further complains the portion sizes vary.

"There are noticeable differences on the size of biscuits and cakes, as well as the sides," according to Laswell, who also wants hot meals to be served from the jail's kitchen.

The Benton County Jail has served only cold food for years. The meals, provided through Aramark Correctional Institution Services, average 3,000 calories a day, according to Jail Capt. Hunter Petray.

Lawyers for capital murder defendant Manuel Enrique Camacho, who has been awaiting trial for almost two years, complained to a judge recently that he has lost significant weight while in the jail, going from 155 pounds to 118.

Here is the deal, dont like the food, well then you should not have put yourself in the position to be incarcerated.

No sympathy here especially when there are people all over the world, even here in the states that are lucky if they take in 1000 calories a day.

Ruck up bucko and deal with it! "

While I personally would not want to spend time in jail to loose weight, this is one of the best programs Benton County can offer an inmate. Another positive note about this, loosing all this weight allows you to fit on the death chamber table. Buddy you really are not getting any sympathy on this one. "

" Hmmm, there seems to be a difference of opinion on the weight Mr. Laswell claims (a corpulent 413 pounds) he weighed when booked into BCDC and the weight listed upon intake (a mere, morbidly obese 382 pounds). Either way you slice the bread, this is very unhealthy for a 6'0" tall 19 year old man. As I recall, Mr. Laswell is not sitting in the slammer because he alledegly beat a man to death with a barbell over food. It seems to me that, had Mr. Laswell possessed the self discipline to keep from becoming obese, he probably would have had the discipline to not brutally (albeit allegedly) murder someone. As far as exercising goes, it's apparent he hasn't felt that was important in the past, so why is it now? Follow this link and you will see this poor, underfed prisoner: http://services.co.benton.ar.us/dcn/inmateDetails.aspx?id=110578. With orices going up on everything, I can barely feed my family. If Mr. Laswell were in my household, I simply couldn't afford to provide the amount of food he is used to gobbling down. Of course, this is merely my opinion. "

" You know what I find funny is these prisoners and others that seem to think that a 3000 calorie per day intake is not enough.

I take in less than that (approx 2000 max calories per day, am physically active most of the time and just about 2 years ago I gained 40 pounds bringing me up to my nominal body weight of 192 with 220 being the max.

Thing is that it doesnt matter if a meal is hot or cold, if you eat it you will stay alive and 3000 calories a day will keep up your nominal weight, that is unless you either refuse to eat or you have some ailment. If you are overweight you will most likely loose some before you stabilize, and if you are underweight you will most likely gain until you stabilize.

    Contd........... "

    " Contd.........................

As far as I am concerned he has no case and I hope the judge handling it is sane enough to see the same.

He thinks this is bad, maybe ship his rear off to basic training because let me tell you they will help him shed those extra pounds extremely fast and on a smaller per calorie a day intake, and 4 or 5 times the exercise he is even used to now.

I saw first hand how they treat overweight people in basic, and while I felt sorry for the individual in that situation it was understandable.

The size that this ole boy is at he would most likely have a heart attack trying to handle even the slightest of military training which is the equivalent of about 4 or 5 hours nonstop at the gym.

Try that out on a 2000 to 3500 calorie a day diet. Me and many others survived just fine and in fact were all the better for it.

Again no sympathy here at all. "

I do not know if he is guilty or not, that is for a jury to decide. What I do know is that this suit against the county is one more way for taxpayers to get bleed dry by yet another county inmate suing a local sheriff. He is a health risk to the jail and the staff. The food program is saving his life. He needs to hang this one up and sit back and wait his time in court. "

In order to stay as heavy as he was, he probably ate enough to feed a family. But you are right, that he does not understand that being in jail is not a reward and has the gall to complain.
I think the judge should refuse such frivolous cases, they are ridiculous and just cost money. Once upon a time there were chain gangs and prisoners dined on stale bread and water. Now they expect fine dining and plastic surgery.
On various news reports, food shortages around the world is predicted. And this guy thinks he should be provided enough food to stay obese. "

Anyway, this whine bag needs to be thanking the Benton County jail for helping him lose some weight, and he needs to be on a 1000 calorie diet. My god, I can't believe the man thinks he should have open range of the refrigerator while he is in jail for allegedly murdering somebody. Who do you think you are??? You think you can kill somebody and then you expect somebody to baby you and feed you until you explode?? Get a life. 19 years old and you are as big as you are, you should be ashamed, not be whining for more food. I think you have eaten more than your share already. If he was serving his time in the Tent City at the Maricopa County, Arizona Jail under Sheriff Joe Arpaio, America's toughest sheriff, he would be weighing much less. Rumor has it that under Sheriff Arpaio, the cost to the county to feed an inmate is around 40 cents a day. Sheriff Arpaio also started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. More than 2,000 prisoners live without smoking, coffee, pornographic magazines, movies and unrestricted television. "

LOSE is the word your looking for and can be defined as - to free oneself from : get rid of

Loss can be defined as the act of losing, as in Mr. I'm starving to death is suffering from the LOSS of fat which is better for him than the girth he once had.

I'm only doing this due to the constant misuse of the word loose and if I've offended anyone, well I'm not apologizing. "

Then I was in the war for a year, there were no hot meals for about the first 4 months. Then after 4 months we could get a hot meal every 2 or 3 days if we were not in the field. Boy, those hot meals were good. Not becasue the were prepared well but becasue they were hot. They could have served Camel guts hot and I would have been appreciative. :) I was so sick of MRE's cold. So, I can understand how one would miss eating something hot. Before going to the island for 3 years, I loved milk. Skinny and fat people get the same menu. There are many homeless and financially challenged people who would be happy to get it. They eat three times a day.
But you don't stop at totally misquoting people, you resort to calling names rather than presenting an intelligent argument.
I have never hated anyone for being fat. I simply do not think the judicial system or the taxpayer should be required to accommodate a prisoner because he is accustomed to overeating. "
