OXFORD, Miss. - This time, Arkansas didn't let a big blown lead get in the way of a big Southeastern Conference win.
Having already lost a pair of SEC games to Georgia and Auburn - in which they couldn't hold nine and six-run margins, respectively, in the late innings - the Razorbacks again watched as a big advantage slipped away Saturday. The difference this time was the Diamond Hogs didn't let the late collapse do them in, instead bouncing back for a wild, 13-11 win against Ole Miss in 10 innings in front of 5,648 at Swayze Field.
The victory evened the series, with the two teams concluding the three-game set Saturday night with a second game of a doubleheader. The teams opted to play two games on Saturday as rain is forecast today in Oxford.
Arkansas won the second game 12-4 to win the series.
"Man, we've been in all these close games and they've been wearing me out," Arkansas starting pitcher Justin Wells said. "But you see, our guys never quit. No matter what game we're in, whether it turns out our way or not, we never quit."
Wells - the only player made available to the media with the rest of team and coaches preparing for the nightcap - wasn't at his best Saturday. In six innings of work, the junior righthander allowed five runs on five hits, also giving up a grand slam in the fifth inning which allowed Ole Miss to recover from its seven-run deficit.
No matter how much Wells was struggling, though, it didn't look like Arkansas (26-18, 9-11 SEC) would need much pitching. Because on the other side, Razorbacks' sophomore Tim Smalling was busy having a career day.
Smalling finished 3-for-5 - with all three hits being home runs - and drove in a career-high six runs as Arkansas built leads of 8-1 and 10-5.
"I guess that's what happens when you're leaving the ball up," said Ole Miss starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz, who entered the game with a 1.84 ERA, but allowed eight runs. "I did everything I've been trying to stay away from and I guess that's why I have been pitching so good is because I've been keeping the ball down.
"But I did just the opposite of what I wanted to do."
Even with Smalling tearing the cover off the ball, the Rebels (28-17, 11-10) continued to chip away. And finally, thanks to a pair of throwing errors by Arkansas third baseman Logan Forsythe, Ole Miss was able to complete the comeback in the bottom of the ninth when two runs came across to tie the score, 11-11.
But in the top of the 10th, Arkansas didn't do what it had done against Georgia and Auburn. Instead, the Razorbacks responded right back and took the lead for good when Ben Tschepikow delivered a one-out RBI single and later scored an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Scott Lyons.
"This is very important, especially coming down the stretch," Wells said. "I mean it's no secret, we know what we have to do. There's three series left after this one and Ole Miss is a great team. They remind me of us. They just never quit."
Arkansas Completes Doubleheader Sweep
Logan Forsythe hit two home runs and drove in five and Arkansas collected 13 hits in a 12-4 win to complete a doubleheader sweep against Ole Miss on Saturday at Swayze Field.
Forsythe finished the doubleheader with three home runs as the Razorbacks knocked nine balls out of the park altogether on the day.
Cliff Springston pitched a complete game in the nightcap to improve to 5-2.
Arkansas (26-18, 9-11) won its first SEC series in Oxford since 2002 and moves back into a tie for eighth place in the overall conference standings.
