Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced Friday the opening of a Mexican mall with eco-friendly technologies.
The $640 million pesos investment is Wal-Mart's first sustainable mall with Wal-Mart Supercenter, Sam's Club and Vips, and El Porton restaurants. It is expected to create 3,500 jobs.
The Netzahualcoyoti, Mexico mall features technologies to save energy, reduce water consumption and allow waste recycling. It is the first ecological shopping center in Mexico, Wal-Mart said in a release.
The Ciudad Jardin Ecological Mall is located on a former dump site, which Wal-Mart cleaned, moving garbage to a Tultitian landfill to be used as bio-gas. The company also injected some three tons of ash and lime to stop the decomposition process and generated methane gas to create a more stable surface.
