FARMINGTON - Clarksville relied on the right arm of Haley McCormick to carry the Lady Panthers to a 5-2 win Tuesday against the Farmington Lady Cardinals, securing the Class 4A North Regional Softball Championship and a No. 1 seed in the state tournament.
McCormick pitched her third complete game of the tournament, allowing just one earned run on three hits and a hit batter. She also struck out nine to give her 31 in the tournament.
"She did a good job for us," Clarksville coach Bob Mooney said. "We rely a lot on her. Finally, we got our sticks going tonight and get some runs, and Haley was able to do what she does best."
Clarksville (25-6) trailed for the first time in the tournament after Farmington (24-7) scored a run in the top of the first inning. Lacey Kragel hit a solo home run with two outs, marking the first time McCormick gave up a run in regulation in the tournament.
Farmington starter Skyler Smith ran into trouble in the bottom of the third when the Lady Panthers hurt her with four hits and a pair of walks. A fielding error and a strikeout and passed ball with two outs also allowed Clarksville to score four runs to take the lead.
"We made at least four mistakes tonight, including three big ones in one inning," Farmington coach Randy Osnes said. "A good team will capitalize on those mistakes and that's what Clarksville did."
Smith allowed five run, four earned, on eight hits and the two walks in the third.
The Lady Cardinals cut the deficit to two in the fifth when Teighlor Williams and Katy Chavis reached base with a single and an error with one out. Then Williams came around to score with a two-out single by Samantha Luther.
The Lady Panthers pushed across their final run in the bottom of the fifth when Tierra Chenault drove in Sarah Jo Harvey on an RBI single. Harvey and Lacey Phillips led Clarksville with two hits each.
Farmington plays at 4 p.m. Friday in the first round of the 4A State Softball Tournament in Nashville. Clarksville receives a first-round bye and plays at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday.
