LITTLE ROCK - Three Arkansas congressional members visited Afghanistan on Saturday as part of a diplomatic mission representing the United States.
Fourth District Rep. Mike Ross, D-Prescott, 1st District Marion Berry, D-Gillett and 3rd District Rep. John Boozman, R-Rogers, traveled to the Middle Eastern country as part of a NATO Parliamentary Assembly mission.
Ross and Boozman are delegates to the assembly, a group of legislators from NATO's member and associate countries. Berry served as an alternate delegate.
"It was important for me to visit Afghanistan and see first hand the role the U.S. and NATO are playing in the war against terrorism and to personally thank our troops for their service," Ross said in a news release from his office.
"The recent increase in insurgent activities and violence in Afghanistan demonstrates the need for our NATO allies to join the U.S. in committing more resources and troops for an increased military presence in Afghanistan," he said.
The U.S. delegation met with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and military leaders.
They also made stops in Turkey, where they met with President Abdullah Guel, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Ali Babacan.
