SPRINGDALE -- Springdale Har-Ber Carolina pitcher Nick Reed didn't need much help polishing off cross-town rival Springdale High, throwing six innings and allowing no earned runs in a 4-1 victory Monday night.
Reed struck out seven batters and surrendered just two hits as Springdale (3-17) struggled to get the ball to the outfield against the lanky right hander.
"That was an outstanding performance by Nick Reed," Har-Ber coach Dusting Helmkamp said. "He's done a heck of a job for us and I'm really proud of what he's been able to do."
Reed found himself in a tough spot in the bottom of the sixth. Josh Schwade led the inning off with a double to left-center followed by a walk by Johnny Herrera. A double steal gave Springdale runners on second and third with no outs.
After a lengthy discussion with Helmkamp, Reed stayed in the game and moved back to a conventional wind-up. Reed proceeded to strike out the next two batters and only allowed a run to score on a passed ball before getting out of the jam by forcing Kyle Anderson to ground out.
"That's how you are supposed to win ball games -- getting runners in scoring position," Springdale coach Jeremy Crumwiede said. "We got three cracks, and we only ended up scoring one run on a passed ball. We didn't really hit the ball at all today."
Derek Swan got the game going early for Har-Ber Carolina (9-9). After Hunter Allen reached on an error by the shortstop, Swan cracked a home run to left field, giving Har-Ber the 2-0 lead.
Har-Ber added to its lead in the third inning when Allen drove Josh Baker home with a single up the middle.
Levi Copher's single up the middle, bringing Tyler Pauls home, gave Har-Ber a 4-0 lead in the sixth.
Despite allowing four hits and two earned runs over five innings, Zach Guilliams took the loss for Springdale.
Har-Ber defeated Springdale 14-1 in the second game.
