JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Ten state troopers completed special immigration training Friday, allowing the officers to start enforcing federal immigration laws in Missouri.

Six troopers - two each from Kansas City, Springfield and St. Louis - will be used to speed up processing after traffic stops, and the other four will be assigned to casinos in Kansas City and St. Louis. Their training at a federal police training center in Charleston, S.C., began last month.

Even without immigration training, Missouri police can use a federal database maintained in Vermont to check the immigration status of a stopped motorist. But that means waiting for federal immigration authorities to take custody of an illegal immigrant and begin the deportation procedures.

Now, a state trooper will be able to contact one of the specially trained officers to take custody of an illegal immigrant and start paperwork to begin deportation procedures.

State immigration legislation passed this year and recently signed by Gov. Matt Blunt requires the Missouri State Highway Patrol to seek the federal immigration training whenever there is enough money to pay for it. Federal immigration authorities pay for only the training sessions, with the state responsible for everything else, such as the officers' salaries and travel expenses.

Under a 1996 federal immigration law, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement can train and deputize state and local law enforcement. After the training, called "287g" after a segment in federal law, the police officers work under the supervision of federal immigration authorities.

The immigration training curriculum is laid out in memos signed by the local police department and the Department of Homeland Security. Only officers who are U.S. citizens, have been in their current position for at least two years and have no pending disciplinary actions are eligible to be trained.

But immigration advocates, and even some of the nation's police chiefs, have questioned the wisdom of using police officers to enforce federal immigration laws. They fear that it could make illegal immigrants less likely to report crimes and cooperate with police while stretching local resources.

It took more than five years before any states started seeking the special immigration training. Florida was the first in 2002, and Alabama followed a year later. But since then, at least 15 state have sent at least one local police or prison officer. Nationwide, 765 officers have received training.

" We should endorse the federal SAVE ACT (H.R.4088) that would add real, razor sharp teeth to state immigration laws. We need more enforcement to stop the interdiction of trucks bringing in drugs and illegal immigrants into America. Funding is being cut by the Democrats, so they can gut the border fence and stop the enactment of the Federal SAVE ACT. An army of ICE agents, twenty thousand more border patrol along with massive funding, to supply helicopters, spy probes and other equipment for internal enforcement. This will include extra funding for police departments around the country, to train more officers in Immigration enforcement. The e-verify data base the Fed's are using has a 90.5 success rate. It would be a major deterrent against pariah employers, who hire illegal workers. Its pennies of what taxpayers are unknowingly spending now. We need 'no tolerance' enforcement, that will give maximum arrest and detainment of predator employers of illegal immigrants. Join NUMBERSUSA for free and assist in stopping illegal immigration. "
