ROGERS - A mother was fatally shot Wednesday night in her children's presence by a relative the family invited to stay in their home, a neighbor said.

Police found Veronica Robles, 37, shot to death at 2606 Graham Drive just after 9 p.m. Wednesday. She was shot "numerous times" with a .45-caliber handgun and pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Rogers Police Department news release.

Police were searching Thursday for Sergio Morales-Carrera, 23, the cousin of Robles' husband, in connection with the shooting, said Rogers Lt. Mike Johnson.

As their mother lay dying on the floor, Robles' three youngest children ran out into the street, said Beverly Allred, a neighbor. They screamed in unison, "He shot our mom, he shot our mom. Call the police," Allred said.

She said she watched as a man drove off in the family's truck.

Robles' 15-year-old daughter collapsed in the street, and Allred wrapped her arms around Robles' 5-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son, she said. Robles' 18-year-old son also was home at the time, she said.

The three oldest children told Allred they shielded their youngest sister from the arguing by taking her to the opposite end of the house.

Robles' husband was in Memphis, Tenn., for work when the shooting happened, Allred said. Allred said Robles told her the family took in Morales-Carrera but that he had been causing problems and they recently had asked him to leave.

Allred was working in her front yard when she heard loud screaming across the street Wednesday night. A few minutes later, Morales-Carrera left the home, went to a truck parked in the street, then walked back into the home. Seconds later, Allred heard three shots, she said.

Police recovered a 1989 GMC truck missing from the residence around 8:39 a.m. Thursday at Tesoro Beach Restaurant at 701 S. Thompson St. in Springdale, according to a Rogers Police news release.

Police didn't find a handgun in the truck, which was parked in front of the restaurant, said Springdale Police Lt. Scott Lewis. Springdale Police officers searched the restaurant but found no one in the building, Lewis said.

Morales-Carrera may be with family in the area, Johnson said.

The children were released to their father after Rogers Police officers interviewed them at the department Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon, Johnson said.

The 5-year-old girl refused to leave Allred's side to go with the police officers Wednesday night. An officer spoke quietly with the girl and gave her a teddy bear to hold. Officers later found shoes to cover her bare feet, Allred said.

Robles' oldest son, Oscar, arrived at the house Wednesday night to be with his brothers and sisters, Allred said. After police interviewed Oscar, Allred said she asked him if he was OK.

"He said, 'Bev, I got to be for my sisters and brothers,'" she said.

The family was in the process of moving from Rogers to Bentonville, Allred said.

"All I can see is the screaming," Allred said, sitting on her front porch Thursday afternoon and gently touching her temple.

The body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock for an autopsy, Johnson said.

The last homicide in Rogers was in early 2005, he said.

Anyone with information regarding Morales-Carrera can contact the Rogers Police Department at 636-4141.

Funding is limited under current immigration laws, because Democrats have gutted most appropriations. Instead of going after illegal immigrants, that can lead to mistakes. We must enact the Federal SAVE ACT (H.R.4088) and go after the real culprits.

These are the predatory businesses that ignore Immigration laws. Once caught employers should have the heaviest penalties thrown against them. Unless they have used the government E-verify data base and those hired have been shown to be legal. Then penalties should be harsh and severe. They are stealing jobs from citizens and legal residents, which should be classed as a 'A' felony. If convicted should be heavily fined, business assets confiscated to add funds to ICE.

If caught with more than five illegal immigrants in their employ, should be locked away for at least 5 years. No half-measures like using factory managers as a scapegoat. No matter their highest echelon, no Chairman, CEO, Director should be able to shun our laws. Millions of regular people are joining for free www.numbersusa.com, to stop this travesty of our immigration laws. "

My 16 yr old daughter was murdered and I couldn't care less what color the killer/s happens to be. We still don't know who did it, but I can guarantee they were not Hispanics. You can go anywhere in the world and find ppl who have something against another ppl.
Yes there are many illegals here but not all of them are Hispanic. And it isn't as easy as walking across "an invisable line" Some of those ppl pay shiesters every penny the family has to get into this country. They pile them into trucks, they die, they get sick and some of them get caught. Those that make it and get jobs work for nothing. And they work their butts off! Yes some are criminals but not all. Most of the ppl are families trying to stay alive, just like the rest of us. Do I think it's ok for illegals to collect funds from our gov, send their kids to school for nothing(don't pay taxes), free med. when we can't get it? NO!!! " I am appalled at reading some of the remarks that appear in these comments day after day coming from people I thought I knew and was proud to call a friend. It seems that NWA society has taken that twisted road of racial hatred and we all should be alarmed. NWA used to be the "Paradise" of the South, but now it is becoming like the bouroughs of NYC. Our great Constitution say that "All men are equal", not just whites. The bible say we ALL are children of GOD, not just whites. I have traveled in 107 different countries now, and each race has its beauty and yes, it has a bad side but we should be able to come together as one and help each other to get rid of the bad and adult enough to appreciate the beauty that each race brings to our culture. I myself do not like illegal aliens anymore than the next person on this blog but I will not let the actions of those who defile our laws make me hate an entire race because of a few. My heart goes out to the children in this case and I sincerely hope they catch the guy. But to brand every Hispanic or other race as bad for the actions of one or a few is totally wrong in the eyes of GOD and when we do this we ourselves are no better than the ones who do bad. "

" I see from the above blogs that the illegal alien problem, and indirectly the Hispanics, have gotten us at each others throats. Are people so emotionally wrought that they are now willing to take arms up against each other over people who don't belong here in the first place? Sounds like the old divide and conquer scheme. If that happens, it will be a bloodbath on both sides. Is this what this all comes down to? People killing one another to get the kind of country they want? All I know is all of you better think before you type and get a better handle on your emotions. I'm seeing very little respect given to those who disagree with either side. A good rebuttal has reasoning and logic behind it. Not religious mythology and race. By the way, for those of you who don't know, the Hispanics are comprised of three races not one. So they are an ethnic group, not a race per se. Common misconception. So, am I going to get a civilized response or a bunch of in your face stuff? Who, out there has the intelligence to debate or rebut what I have posted here? "

Mexican consulates throughout the US, as well as mexican officials, now insert their noses into US courts....and our "leaders" allow it. Due to mexico's laws against the death penalty, their lawsuit claims mexican laws cover these persons, so the death penalty in the US cannot apply to them. If you are a US citizen and you commit an atrocious crime on US soil, the death penalty would apply. If you are a mexican and you commit the same crime, the mexican gov't asserts the death penalty cannot apply. Think long and hard about that - once again, the mexican government inserts their nose in US policy and our government allows it. Unbelievable. Why do you think mexico will not extradite a criminal to the US if the criminal would be eligible for the death penalty? "

" if bush would have secured the border on day one of his presidency then the illegals would not be here in the millions. and then the bad, hard-core criminals that are a very small part of those millions would not be here. lincon and pryor should daily be in the senate yelling and screaming for someone to hear them about the illegals in this area and this country who murder us, rape us, sell drugs to us, etc, etc. i have met too many good U.S. citizens who happen to be Hispanic for this to be a racial/cultural thing with me. secure the borders so good, legal, law abiding Mexican-Americans and other Hispanics can live in peace here. if they are legal it is their home too. " clinton had 8 years to secure the borders.....why should bush do it on day 1? "

" because it was and is the right thing to do- hence why clinton didnt do it! since 911 there is no excuse for open borders. any military person will tell you, you have to have the flanks secure. we spend 2.5 billion a week on an ill-advised war to secure their nation and yet we do not even have our own homeland secure. " 91151 please reread your last post to me. You totally confused me. . You said, I am a conservative who does not have a bleeding heart for anyone who breaks the law and I vote that way. You vote for who, someone who stands before you and say they are tough on crime but prosecutes the other way? You speak of your kids and loved ones in the above post and what kind of "price to pay" if someone did something to them, but what would you do if the justice system just stood by and took the easy road to get the case through the courts, like the recent "road rage"? Benton County needs bashed and so do you for letting the elected officials off the hook for not going for the throat on violent crimes. Dont compare Benton County to the rest of the country, not yet anyways. Give it a few more years and you can call it East of Eastern LA because of kind attitudes like yours when it comes to our justice system. So if body needs to move anywhere try packing your own bags, buddy! "

" I have read the comments that have been left. Instead of bashing the illegal aliens at this time why is everyone not thinking or praying for the husband and 5 childred left behind without a mother. Veronica was a very kind, unselfish lady. If you had seen the first reaction of the children as I did YOU WOULD STOP AND RECONSIDER what you are saying that is so negative at this time. There is a time to be negative but right now is not the time, especially if any family member reads the negatism that is being written.Try to find in your hearts what the family (regardless of race) is going through!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! " You know, when someone running for office says they will be tough on crime(and haven't been in that office to prove otherwise) we tend to vote for them. anyone with a record of saying they are tough on crime yet aren't, I don't vote for. And, I am appalled that our attorney's let someone go who should be punished for a crime, it irks me, BUT, my issue is with bashing Benton County. We have our problems, and they need to be fixed, however, this is still a good place to live, and not any different than other counties when it comes to getting someone "off" if they testify against someone else. And those electedthat don't prosecute criminals, when it comes to voting time definitly won't get my vote. And, as far as price to pay, well, hell hath no furry like a parent scorned if anyone hurts my kids and loved ones "

" omg...why are the same people debating? just give eachother your email addresses and move on to another story...quit arguing...
It's almost funny who you can tell on here who are hispanics....by the tone of their comments....
I cant tell you how many times I've open the internet to read the paper and the TOP headlines were about hispanics that commited SOME type of crime....pathetic...to say the least..
and then for the family member to jump on here...and obviously NOT read any of the comments that were left just ads to the pathetic-ness....we are all so sympathetic to the tragedy at hand...it's awful..and I am sure most agree that that's where most of our anger comes from....the fact that this was sensless...the fact that the crime was commited by a hispanic is moot compared to the reality of most of these comments.....make sure you READ all the comments...thru and thru...befor having a hissy fit....
Much love and respect to the family during this time..may God be with you. "
