ROGERS - Pea Ridge and Bentonville school patrons will decide contested school board races on Sept. 16, but no candidate filed to run for an open Rogers School Board seat.
Candidates for school boards across Benton County had to circulate petitions and get signatures of at least 20 registered voters within their districts. The filing period for the seats ended at noon Friday.
In the Bentonville School District, there will be two contested races.
Beth Haney is seeking another four-year term in Position 3 and will face challengers Jonathan Smith and James Dockery.
Miguel Rivera Sr., recently appointed to fill the seat vacated by Doylene Fuqua, faces challenger Bryan Steve Vernetti. The two are vying for the vacated Position 6 seat, with a term ending in 2010.
Pea Ridge district voters will choose between Darin Wright and Mark Woollard for the Position 3 seat. Dianna Wallace did not file to seek another five-year term.
Rogers School Board member Faye Jeffery recently announced she was not running for another five-year term, after serving on the Rogers School Board for 10 years. No one filed to run for Jeffery's seat.
The Arkansas Constitution states the incumbent remains in any elected position until a successor is sworn into office, said Joe Woodson, attorney with the Arkansas Secretary of State's office.
That means Jeffery can continue serving beyond the Sept. 16 school board elections and keep her seat for another five-year term, Woodson said. If Jeffery resigns, however, the school board likely would appoint someone to fill the seat, Woodson said.
Others who filed to run for school board seats, according to the Benton County clerk's office, include:
• Dani Cypert, incumbent, Position 2, Gentry School Board
• John R. Edwards, incumbent, Position 7, Gravette School Board
• Donald Morgan Jr., incumbent, Zone 2, Decatur School Board
• Louis Thomas, incumbent, Zone 3, Siloam Springs School Board
Board members do not declare a party affiliation and board members are not paid in Arkansas.
Fast Fact
Early voting for Sept. 16 school elections begins Sept. 9. Runoffs, if necessary, would be held Oct. 7.
