ROGERS -- Rogers-Lowell Chamber of Commerce officials are encouraging area residents to spend money locally through a new marketing campaign.
BuyNWA is the chamber's effort to build consumer confidence in the area's businesses and strengthen the local economy.
At the heart of the campaign is more than 40 coupons from Rogers and Lowell businesses available through the campaign's Web site www.buynwa.biz.
Coupons available include a free consultation and financial plan from Chastain Financial LLC, a free appetizer with purchase from Famous Dave's BBQ, one free month of heartworm protection from New Hope Animal Hospital and six months of free storage from Dynamic Storage.
"The purchase you make in Rogers, Lowell or Bentonville help us help ourselves," said Rogers Mayor Steve Womack said during a midafternoon press conference.
Discussions on the strength of the local economy became a field of comparisons -- better than many communities in the country, not as strong as it was in the commercial and residential development peak of a few years ago, but a big improvement still from a decade ago, officials said.
Chamber President Raymond Burns urged consumers to spend local in order to ensure the future success of local businesses.
"There are thousands of businesses that need more business, and if we don't support them, they aren't going to he here," Burns said.
Some are already gone. In recent months, Rogers has lost the business of Ryan's Family Steakhouse, Fuddruckers and Goody's Family Clothing, all which filed for bankruptcy and closed their area locations, and Oscar's Prime Rib & Steak House.
The BuyNWA campaign will include a second phase in early 2009 to encourage businesses to buy 5 percent of their company's goods from other local businesses.
