FAYETTEVILLE -- "We saved you a spot," one bus passenger told another on Ozark Regional Transit's Sixth Street route on a recent Monday.

"That was just for you," chimed in Lois Thomas of Fayetteville, in with a laugh.

Many riders on Ozark Regional Transit know one another. They call the bus driver by his or her first name.

Thomas boarded the bus at Hillcrest Towers, a hub for two of the city's four bus routes. She rode a bus from the Northwest Arkansas Mall after doing some shopping and caught a second bus to get home in south Fayetteville.

Like many of those interviewed, Thomas doesn't own a car. She needs ORT to get around.

John Matthews is the exception. He'd rather ride the bus than pay to fill up his car.

"A dollar and a quarter versus at least $12 to $15 in gas," Matthews said. "It might not be the particular time I want to go, but I just kind of got to save the money."

Bus fare is $1.25, but if someone buys a $30 monthly pass to get back and forth from work, they average about 71 cents per ride, said Phil Pumphrey, ORT's director.

" Does Ozark Regional Transit plan on expanding to include the more rural towns like Pea Ridge. Are they planning to include Bentonville some day? I think we need a regional solution. A rail solution to Fayetteville that would travel from Bentonville through Rogers and Springdale to Fayetteville and possible to Fort Smith. Busses to handle local transit needs. Parking lots at the rail stations for out of towners to leave cars while using the transit system. I would think the state would support this green effort.

    have a great day your
