BENTONVILLE - A Rogers man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for Internet stalking of a child.

Aaron Humphrey, 24, pleaded guilty to the felony charge Monday in Benton County Circuit Court. He admitted to Senior Circuit Judge Tom Keith that he chatted online with someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl and arranged to meet her.

Keith asked Humphrey if he expected to have sex with the girl. Humphrey said he did at first, but changed his mind.

The girl was actually a criminal investigator with the Benton County Sheriff's Office, according to court documents. Humphrey initiated the chatting.

Humphrey and the investigator chatted nine times between January and March. Sheriff's deputies arrested Humphrey on March 8 when he arrived at an arranged meeting point.

In exchange for Humphrey's guilty plea, Deputy Prosecutor Mike Armstrong dropped a felony computer child pornography charge.

Humphrey's attorney, Janette McKinney, spoke on his behalf.

"In visiting with Mr. Humphrey, he's a very pleasant young man and he's sorry he got himself into trouble," she told the judge.

Humphrey will also serve an eight-year suspended sentence and pay a $1,000 fine and other fees. He must complete sex offender treatment. He can't visit social networking Internet sites or chat rooms, according to the plea agreement.

In a separate case, Humphrey pleaded guilty to five felony drug charges: three counts of delivering a controlled substance, one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Keith sentenced him to six years in prison on the first count of delivering a controlled substance and 10-year suspended sentences on the other four counts. The six-year sentence is consecutive to the sentence for Internet stalking for a total of 18 years. The four 10-year sentences are concurrent with each other. Humphrey was fined another $1,000.

Deputy Prosecutor Brandon Carter prosecuted and Alison Lee represented Humphrey in the drug case.

Wake up and smell the coffee Ms. McKinney he's a pervert with a drug problem. "

" Deputy Prosecutor Mike Armstrong dropped a felony computer child pornography charge in exchange for a guilty plea? That's an abomination to drop charges when this man intended to come have sex with a child. He'd talked to "her" for 3 months...showed up, but had changed his mind. Wish I had $5 for everytime I've heard a pervert say that.

Armstrong should have stood tough. Chances are good the pervert would have pled guilty rather than face a Benton County jury. If a jury had gotten hold of this guy, he would have been off the streets for a very long time.

Prosecutor Armstrong, start protecting the children and stop using them as bargaining chips. "

" I agree with Dr. Know in the case of Lifer66. I graduated with this young man from RHS in 2002 and it is true that he receieved special attention but your comments are a testament to many of the problems that we have with special needs children. Your ability to criticize so easily without knowing an individual you know nothing about only further adds to your ignorance. "

" ok I will agree it aint the prettiest photo I ever saw,but then again the guy obviously has a problem and seeing that pic tells us part of the reason. Now that the joking is done,he was going to have sex with a child,he deserves to be sentenced to the max the law allows,in all my years,I have never seen so many perverts as there are today,is it just they didnt get caught before or is there something seriously wrong with the way kids are being raised these days?Everyday its another pervert going after a child,When is the judicial system going to learn that to stop this insanity they are going to have to start doing to these perverts what they were going to do to their victim,I cant type the word but I am sure yall get it.When these perverts start seeing thier kind going to prison and never getting out they might start rethinking thier perverted little ways. This si the sickest crime I can imagine, makes me want to puke, these sick individuals need to be put in a cell with some surenough lifers and and close the door and walk away, let karma take over, what goes around comes around, litterally! You typed "Weak knee law enforcement and weak knee prosecutors = get off easy!! Where was the Sheriff?"

You obviously don't know how the system works. It appears that law enforcement did a fine job of bringing charges against the man and arresting him. It us up to the prosecutors office to prosecute offenders, not the Sheriff's Office. It is out of the Sheriff's Office's hands. "

" I take lifer's remark about the short bus as an expression that was not meant to hurt anyone. Maybe just express his disgust in what we see more and more in our communities. I don't think kids are raised anymore. They raise themselves. It takes 2 people to survive in the lap of poverty we all enjoy now. With all the taxes we are expected to turn over for idiot stuff. We need stronger laws for this. Frankly I am surprised he's not older. That's who I usually see getting caught for this. Old middle aged men. Or old nasty women. We need to protect our kids. My warped opinion. "

    " ATTENTION ALL COMMENT MAKERS!!
You might not realize this but people make mistakes. None of you have the right to say other wise because 99% of the all people who use the internet use chat rooms. And 99% of the time you don't know who you are talking or even if they are tell the truth about themselves. You all are just have nothing better to do then comment on someones life. This man isn't interest in minors nor is he interested in having sex with a minors. It was a mistake just like every other human being. Everyone makes mistakes. Now I'm not saying that there aren't people out there who do like the attention of minors. But in this case I can stand up and say that you are all wrong on your opinion on the person. He isn't mental like some of you commented he didn't have mental issues in school or out of school. He is a person who made a mistake. Talked to the wrong person. And if we were all sentenced to prision for talking to the wrong person then the majority of the WORLD would be in prison. If anyone would like to further talk about this don't comment on this page, send me an email. I have no problem sticking up for some I know isn't what this article makes him out to sound like. My email address is Jolliegurl04@yahoo.com please email away with your comments "

" sounds tome like te police are the ones encouraging the sex talk? and if not then tell me how many of these men that you people are calling perverts have actually been talking to young girls. i dont think any of them have been talking to young girls, they are talking to usually grown men, and im starting to think that maybe they enjoy the "talk". thirteen year old girls usually will not listen to a man talking about sex. and most thirteen year olds tell people that they are 16, so whos to know the real age of someone on the internet? i personally think the police are going about this internet predator the wrong way. "

" The bottom line is this, HM2008 or anyone else: If you are in an internet chatroom, and someone messages you (or you message them, as this article indicates Mr. Humphrey did with the cop)and you find out that the person you are talking with is underage, you STOP TALKING TO THEM. There is NO need for a grown man or woman to be "just chatting" with a child with whom they aren't related to or don't have parental consent to talk to. And as for this being a "mistake," you also should never say anything to a child you wouldn't say to that child in front of his or her parents. Mistakes and accidents do happen. But arranging a meeting with someone you believed to be underage that you have already had frank sexual conversation with isn't simply a "mistake". It's a calculated, premeditated attempt to commit child rape. Just calling it what it is. "

" ok whathaheck, what if you talk to a whole lot of women like 50-75 and you talk for months and some people tell you their age and some people tell you a fake age, then you dont talk to some people and then you talk again months down the line and one of them sends you a pic, then same one sends you another pic, looking even older in the second pic, but not reminding you how old she said she was three months ago is and you think hmm she looks over 16 in the pic, and you go meet her, and when you do its a team of police waiting for you. "

    hm2008 wrote on Aug 18, 2008 9:31 AM:

" WhaTheHeck- you can't possibly say that you have never gone in a chat room and talked to someone you thought was of age? It happens everyday, you make it sound like he is the first person to be wrong about something. I agree that there is no need for grown adults to be chatting online to young kids but think about it. Where are these childrens parents if they are willing to give there kids accounts that are interent ready and not pay attention to what there kid is doing then they are more responsible for what happens. Mr. Humphrey isn't the kind of person to just jump on the internet and find a minor. Is he is a very smart adult, who was going through a rough patch, and was confused. Nobody can say that they haven't had a bad moment in there life that they regret? That is all this is a bad moment in his life that he is going to to regret, but saying things that you don't know are true isn't fair to anyone. There are people out there in this world right now talking to minors and doing more things with minors, but yet everyone is wasting there time on someone who made a mistake and is sorry for it? Why can't we just forgive and forget? Why keep commenting isn't going to make you feel better? Is it going to change what happened? No, just upset other readers that are his family. "

WhaTheHeck wrote on Aug 18, 2008 3:28 PM:

" To Hello: Your scenerio is not what is described in the article. "He admitted to Senior Circuit Judge Tom Keith that he chatted online with someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl and arranged to meet her." He knew the person he was talking to admitted to being 13 and went to meet her anyway. If you, Hello, have any doubts about the age of the person you're talking to online, you have two choices: refrain from frank sexual conversations with them or don't talk to them at all. The cops aren't going to arrest you for saying "Hello". It is common sense that is obviously not so common.

Secondly, Hm2008, I'm very sorry that this has put his and your family through so much. You are absolutely right that parents should be more responsible for their children. However, that being said, adults should be responsible for THEMSELVES. It is, after all, their hide that will be sitting in jail. Your "forgive and forget" attitude is far too lenient for my taste. Was it a mistake? Probably. A moment of lunacy? Probably. But it's still a crime that doesn't deserve a free pass.

And by no means did I mean for it sound as if he is the first person to ever commit this crime. However, I do hope he won't be the last to be arrested for it. And hopefully next time, it'll be someone you and I both agree deserves to be in jail. "

    " hey
i never said it was this guys scenario, i am talking about a case that is in the appeals court. and in that particular case it was just like i said. i will argue this point until i die. the way the police are doing these internet stings are wrong. myself i only talk to people i know, but young adults will talk to just about anyone that will listen to them. "

    hm2008 wrote on Aug 22, 2008 12:12 AM:

" WhaTheHeck- Everyone makes mistakes correct? Okay so why is it that you can sit there on your computer and say that you everything about this one person because of ONE article online/in the newspaper. Is it correct for you to assume that this gentlemen does this all the time? Is it correct for you to assume that just because he was in a chat room talking to an undercover cop PRETENDING to be 13? And finally how do you know that the undercover cop said what this article says, cops and attorney's but enough pressure one person can agree to anything. This person isn't a sex offender, this person isn't out to "play" with minors. This person was upset because he got in trouble and needed someone outside of his family to talked to. Talking isn't a crime, Lying about your age (like the undercover cop did) isn't a crime. But yet you sit there and say it is. I'm not asking you to give a free pass, I'm just asking to stop with the assumtions because you don't know everything about this situation. You just read what the courts wanted you to know. Ever think of that?? "
