BENTONVILLE -- The body of a teacher who collapsed at Bentonville High School on Friday has been sent to the state medical examiner's office in Little Rock.
Heidi Meyer, who was in her 30s, taught literacy at Washington Junior High School in Bentonville since about 2001, said Bentonville Superintendent Gary Compton.
Meyer, along with hundreds of other teachers, attended back-to-school events at Arend Arts Center. She was crossing a street between the arts center and the high school's north building when she collapsed shortly before 11 a.m., Compton said.
Bystanders at first thought Meyer's knees caused the collapse because she recently had knee surgery, Compton said.
"It became evident it was more serious when she stayed on the ground," Compton said.
Someone called 911 and fire and rescue trucks arrived within minutes, he said.
Meyer was taken to Northwest Medical Center-Bentonville, said Lt. Jon Simpson of the Bentonville Police Department. Police are not investigating Meyer's death because no foul play is suspected, Simpson said.
However, he confirmed Meyer's body was sent to the medical examiner for an autopsy.
Meyer was married and had a 2-year-old daughter, Compton said.
Washington Junior High teachers had grief counseling on Friday, he said.
