SPRINGDALE -- The Springdale High defense showed resiliency Thursday night, something coach Kevin Johnson hopes is a sign of things to come.
Playing in a game-like scrimmage, the Bulldogs held off two long Siloam Springs drives and came away with a 14-3 victory.
Springdale senior quarterback Ashton Glaser completed 8-of-14 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown in the first half and receiver Ladarius Eckwood caught five passes for 49 yards.
Eckwood caught Glaser's lone touchdown pass in the northwest corner of the end zone by diving over a defender and landing on his back with the ball in his hands.
Springdale scored its other touchdown in the second half on a 4-yard run by sophomore quarterback Joseph Calcagni.
"Our defense bent and made the plays when it had to to keep (Siloam) out of the end zone," Johnson said. "We don't want to be a defense that bends, but we'll take what we can get."
Siloam's offense, led by junior quarterback Bryan Adair, had its share of ups and downs, but moved the ball effectively.
Adair completed 7-of-16 passes for 64 yards in the first half while senior Jake Cifuentes had seven carries for 21 yards and Anthony Autry had eight carries for 46 yards.
Siloam coach Clint Ashcraft said he was pleased with how the Panthers moved the ball, but wished they could have got into the end zone.
"In the first half, we had two 18-play drives ... and we were happy with that," Ashcraft said. "We're disappointed we didn't score. But we moved the ball down the field and had chances there."
Ashcraft also said Adair was noticeably nervous in his varsity debut, but he'll continue to improve as the season progresses.
"Going up against (Springdale's) defense, which I think is going to be pretty good this year, I think that was really good for him," Ashcraft said. "He was nervous and we knew he was going to be nervous. I think it'll only get better for him once he starts to relax."
Siloam's only score came on a 23-yard field goal in the first half from sophomore Pablo Castillo.
