Lions Open With Convincing Win

BENTONVILLE -- Gravette picked up right where it left off with senior quarterback Ethan McKinzie at the helm.
Led by Teddy Selby's 194 yards rushing, the Lions -- a state semifinalist a season ago -- opened up a quick lead and held off Clarksville for a 27-16 win on Tuesday night. Selby finished with 27 carries, including a 17-yard touchdown run for the game's first score.
McKinzie, who broke his ankle in the state quarterfinals last season -- in the closing seconds of Gravette's 10th straight win -- returned for the first time on Tuesday. He finished 9 of 20 passing for 145 yards, also rushing for a pair of first-half touchdowns.
It was Selby, however, who did most of the damage against the Panthers. The speedy 5-foot-9, 189-pound senior running back had 104 yards rushing in the first quarter and 143 at halftime as the Lions (1-0) opened a 20-0 lead in the second quarter.
Clarksville (0-1) closed Gravette's lead to 27-16 in the third quarter on a safety, but the Lions forced a key fumble on the goal line and ran out the clock for the win.
