ROGERS -- A decision about how best to deal with structural issues at Fire Station 5 may be made Tuesday.
The City Council will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday as a committee of the whole to listen to another presentation by architect Don Spann regarding Station 5, which is located at 2525 Pinnacle Hills Parkway.
Spann was contracted by the city to determine whether drainage problems at the station can be remedied. Water inside the walls of the station has caused structural members to rust, and mold and mildew to fester within the walls.
Council members will then consider whether to demolish the building and elevate the foundation by 3 feet or demolish all but the apparatus bays and rebuild the station around them on the existing foundation.
A cost analysis and estimate for both plans was presented to council members and the mayor on Aug. 29.
It could cost $1,034,222, or $131.75 per square foot, to demolish most of Station 5 and rebuild it around the existing bays and $1,580,750, or $203.99 per square foot, to demolish the structure and raise the foundation, according to estimates provided by Spann.
Council members delayed making a decision until Spann could confer with CEI Engineering Associates to determine if the drainage situation could be remedied without elevating the site.
Spann said engineers told him the drainage had already been fixed, but there were other things that could be done to mitigate drainage problems associated with runoff.
The council will also consider a contract with Crafton, Tull, Sparks and Associates to design a portion of the Rogers Trail System from the north side of New Hope Road to the west side of Horsebarn Road.
The trail construction is being undertaken to comply with a two-year $1.3 million matching grant from the Walton Family Foundation to build trails.
The grant is a one-to-one match and is for 2008 and 2009. Officials had planned to spend $500,000 on trails this year and next. They must spend an additional $650,000 by the end of 2008, as well as in 2009, to be eligible for the Walton grant, said Rick Stocker, director of parks and recreation.
