Nicholas Charles Sparks was born in Omaha, Neb., on New Year's Eve in 1965. After graduating valedictorian from high school, he received a full track scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. As a college freshman, he broke the Notre Dame school record as part of a relay team in 1985 (a record that still stands). He is still an avid athlete and volunteer coaches an award-winning high school track team in New Bern, N.C. Additionally, he is a major contributor to the Creative Writing Program (MFA) at the University of Notre Dame. After graduating from college with high honors, he worked a variety of jobs. During this time he wrote three books though only one was published.
In 1994, while working in pharmaceutical sales, he wrote his first best-selling book, "The Notebook." He followed with several other bestsellers, which include, among many, "Message in a Bottle," "A Walk to Remember," "The Wedding" and "Nights in Rodanthe." The Warner Brothers film based on "Nights in Rodanthe" is scheduled to open Sept. 26. His new book "The Lucky One," is to be released Sept. 30.
