BENTONVILLE — A man was killed Sunday after he lost control of his bicycle and went under the back tires of a tanker truck fully loaded with milk, police said.

Police won’t release the name of the man, believed to be 19, until his family is notified, Police Chief James Allen said.

The man and another person were biking northbound on Southeast “E” Street between Southeast Sixth and Southeast Fifth streets as the truck drove south. The truck had just pulled onto the road and was driving slowly, Allen said.

“I don’t know what (else) the truck driver could have done,” he said.

It’s routine to test drivers for alcohol after such accidents, but the driver didn’t appear intoxicated, Allen said.

The driver sat on the stoop of his truck behind police tape and hung his head. He told Jason Quail, who pulled up shortly after the accident, that he thought he’d passed the man and didn’t realize what happened until it was too late, Quail said. Quail was driving through on his lunch break.

The accident happened about 1:30 p.m. in front of the Kraft Foods building.

Miguel Amador, who lives across the street, said trucks frequently bring milk to Kraft Foods.

“Some of them drive pretty fast sometimes,” he said.

The street is a popular one for children biking. A bike trail is nearby.
