SPECIAL TO THE MORNING NEWS
SPRINGDALE -- Nothing could stop Springdale Har-Ber's offense in the first two games of the season, and the same is true through the third.
From quarterback Zach Faust to running back Derek Brinker to a receiving corps which has no No. 1 threat, but a slew of players capable of making big plays, the Wildcats have been nothing short of spectacular in their first three games of the season.
Har-Ber's weapons came through again on Friday night in a 41-14 victory over Coweta, Okla., that was well in-hand before halftime and gave the Wildcats a 3-0 record heading into next week's 7A-West Conference opener against crosstown rival Springdale High.
"The first half, I think we scored every drive," Faust said. "I'd say things are going pretty good."
After a 45-15 victory over Greenwood in Week 1 and a 48-10 drubbing of Alma in Week 2, the Wildcats have now outscored their opponents 124-39.
The offensive showcase started with the first play of the game when Faust completed a 65-yard pass to wide receiver Josh McKinney. Oscar Escobar's 33-yard field goal gave Har-Ber a 3-0 lead four plays later, marking the only Wildcat drive -- aside from the one that ended before halftime -- that didn't result in a touchdown.
"I thought (Faust) was really clean and there were some big windows to throw into," Har-Ber coach Chris Wood said. "(McKinney) really set the pace with the first play. Our receivers have done a great job all along, and our offensive line was great."
Faust threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone, and completed passes to eight different Wildcats before Har-Ber took a 38-0 lead into halftime.
"We run the Spread offense, so we know how to defend it," Coweta coach Bubba Burcham said. "We obviously just didn't do a very dang good job of it. Any time you line up, you can't have big plays, turnovers or penalties -- and that's everything we did."
Brinker also scored all three of his touchdowns in the first and second quarters. He finished with seven carries for 74 yards and two scores, and caught two passes for 25 yards and a score.
Defensively, the Wildcats were once again strong. Coweta (1-2) didn't score its first points until Jarel Draper's 6-yard touchdown run in the third made it 41-7.
GAME BREAKER
Springdale Har-Ber 41, Coweta, Okla. 14
Why Har-Ber Won
Once again, the Wildcats' offense couldn't be stopped. Quarterback Zach Faust had all day to complete passes and the offensive line never faltered.
Why The Tigers Lost
The Tigers were almost silent offensively. Dropped passes, bad reads and errant throws kept Coweta from ever getting in a groove.
