FAYETTEVILLE -- Having ESPN's College GameDay come to different campuses across the Southeastern Conference is never a big surprise. In fact, when the now famous quartet of Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard pick a weekend destination, seeing the foursome end up at an LSU, Florida, Auburn or Georgia has become almost the norm.
But to have GameDay at Vanderbilt? Now that's a different story altogether.
While the famous ESPN show is no stranger to the SEC, making an appearance in Nashville, Tenn. -- home of the once lowly Commodores -- might seem absurd to most football fans across the country. But when the GameDay trucks unload their gear this weekend, it's Vanderbilt -- VANDERBILT! -- that will be attracting the national attention for once.
Off to their first 4-0 start since 2005 and ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since 1984, the Commodores have caught the media buzz lately. And that includes GameDay, which will be in town for 19th-ranked Vanderbilt's showdown with No. 13 Auburn.
"There's no doubt there's a buzz," Commodores coach Bobby Johnson said. "I went over to the Commons on Monday to meet with the freshman and every one of them knew that GameDay was coming. And these were bookworm kind of guys and they were making there plans to be there with their signs.
"So it's definitely a big thing for our students."
Familiar Foes
Current Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix was at South Carolina before coming to Oxford. By the same token, current Gamecocks defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson became quite familiar with the Rebels while coaching rival Mississippi State before going to Columbia, S.C.
Saturday, Nix and Johnson will try to see who has the upper hand when Ole Miss and South Carolina square off in a pivotal SEC clash.
"It probably really doesn't matter. Football is football and Tyrone is at Ole Miss and Ellis is at South Carolina," Rebels coach Houston Nutt said. "You get locked into those players and you're schemes and the job that you must do."
Time For Some Real Football
Kentucky coach Rich Brooks is satisfied with his team's 4-0 start this season. At the same time, Brooks isn't crazy enough to think his Wildcats' perfect record is reason enough to go preaching to the crowds that his troops are suddenly ready for the postseason. Especially since Kentucky is the one Southeastern Conference team which still hasn't played a league opponent.
And first up for the Wildcats in SEC play is the league's hottest team in Alabama.
"It's a huge challenge for our defense and also a huge challenge for our offense," Brooks said. "It's obviously important that we try to stay in the game early because (Alabama) has destroyed some really good football teams early on and just taken a commanding lead."
Defense, More Defense and No Offense
Alabama has not allowed a single point in the first quarter so far this entire season, outscoring opponents, 74-0... Almost as impressive, rival Auburn has not allowed a single touchdown in the first half through its first five games this season... But on the flip side, Arkansas has not scored a single point in the first quarter through four games in 2008.
Green Pastures
The Southeastern Conference might still be the best league in college football, but several teams in the SEC are dealing with a heavy dose of inexperience this fall. Of the 10 college teams playing the most true freshman this season, three of those teams happen to be in the SEC:

5-10 * 200 * Senior
Batesville, Miss. (South Panola HS)
Sanford recorded a game-high 11 total tackles -- including four solos -- in Ole Miss' stunning 31-30 victory at Florida last weekend. It was Sanford's ninth career double-figure tackle game at Ole Miss, as he is the current active career leader in SEC tackles with 248 stops. Led by Sanford, the Rebels' defense stopped Florida on downs twice and held the Gators to three plays and out on five possessions. Ole Miss' defense also forced five turnovers in the contest.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Ryan Succop
Placekicker, South Carolina
6-3 * 221 * Senior
Hickory, N.C. (HS)
Succop accounted for 14 of South Carolina's points in a 26-13 win last week against Alabama-Birmingham. He set a personal high with four field goals, converting from 44, 48, 26 and 24 yards out. The four field goals were the most by a South Carolina kicker since 1997. Succop has made his last seven field goal attempts and is 10-for-12 on the season. The senior kicker now has 207 career points, tying Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers for second place on the all-time list at South Carolina.
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN
Garry Williams
Tackle, Kentucky
6-3 * 300 * Senior
Louisville, Ky. (Seneca HS)
Williams did not allow a quarterback sack or have a penalty in Kentucky's 41-3 win against Western Kentucky. With Williams leading the way, the Wildcats generated 398 yards of total offense and scored a season high in total points. The offensive line also did not allow any sacks in the game and gave up just one negative yardage play in the contest.
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN
Antonio Coleman
Defensive End, Auburn
6-2 * 252 * Junior
Mobile, Ala. (Williamson HS)
Coleman picked up four tackles, including a sack and one and half tackles for a loss in Auburn's 14-12 win against Tennessee. He helped the Tigers' defense hold Tennessee to a season-low in total offense (191 yards). Coleman also now leads the SEC in sacks with four and has a tackle for a loss in seven consecutive games dating back to last season.
FRESHMAN
Jarrett Lee
Quarterback, LSU
6-2 * 216
Brenham, Texas (HS)
Making his first career start, Lee completed 18 of 27 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns in LSU's 34-24 win against Mississippi State. His 261-yard passing effort was the most by an LSU freshman since Josh Booty threw for 280 yards against Georgia in 1999. Lee also became the first Tiger freshman to play the entire game and win his first SEC start since Herb Tyler led LSU to a 38-9 win over Ole Miss in 1995.
