Bella Vista's alderman in the Ward 1, Position 2 seat next year will be a newcomer to city hall.
Ron Krolikowski and Patty Jean Cox are competing for the position. Krolikowski is a retired Nebraska state patrolman who is president of the Bella Vista Animal Shelter's board. Cox is a retired registered nurse who previously served on school and library boards in Iowa.
Residents will elect six aldermen, two each from three wards, for the first time since Bella Vista became a first-class city in mid-2007. Five aldermen currently serve on the council.
Cox thinks a balanced budget should be the city's priority, she said. Bella Vista may need to expand its fire and police services if the budget will allow for it, she said.
Krolikowski also said he would look at police and fire department staffing to ensure the roads are safe. He, too, said this would depend upon the city's budget.
"I am from the old school," Krolikowski said. "If you don't have the money, you don't get it."
Cox said she reads a lot but has been apolitical since moving to Bella Vista 10 years ago from South Dakota.
"I'm sensible," she said. "I'm willing to listen. I have no preconceived ideas. I have no affiliation with the (Property Owners Association)."
Krolikowski said his biggest strength is his people skills. He likes to listen to people and their ideas and gets the facts before making decisions, he said.
Cooperation is the key between the city and Property Owners Association, Krolikowski said. He knows many of the association's board members and wants to make sure the lines of communication stay open.
In the next two years, Cox would like to see the new city government continue to progress, she said.
Krolikowski would like to see the city take over the Bella Vista Library and establish a dog park over the next few years.
The election is Nov. 4.
