Correction: This article previously misreported Asa Hutchinson's position in Congress. He was a U.S. representative for the third district of Arkansas.

Former congressman Asa Hutchinson said just a month ago from the Republican National Convention in Minnesota that he was planning a return to the courtroom. Last week, a small law firm with a big name moved onto the fourth floor of the Arkansas World Trade Center.

The Hutchinson Law Group is the private practice of Hutchinson and his son, W. Asa Hutchinson III.

“We are open for business,” the elder Hutchinson confirmed Tuesday with The Morning News.

Hutchinson said the firm is a general litigation practice with specialties in corporate investigations and white collar crime.

The younger Hutchinson was mostly recently a partner at Rogers firm Warner, Smith & Harris Plc, specializing in commercial litigation and intellectual property. He is a former federal prosecutor and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office attorney.

“My son has developed a very good litigation practice in Northwest Arkansas, and I will be adding some significant national clients as well,” Hutchinson said.

Hutchinson was defeated by Democrat Mike Beebe in the 2006 gubernatorial race. He practiced law in Arkansas for more than 21 years before being elected to Congress, where he led the Senate impeachment trial against President Clinton. He also served three years as U.S. Attorney for the Western District.

Following his terms in the House of Representatives, Hutchinson in 2005 founded consulting firm Hutchinson Group LLC in Little Rock and accepted a one-year position as a partner in the litigation division of the Venable Law Firm in Washington, D.C. Hutchinson said it marked his first return to the courtroom since 1996.

Hutchinson has since resigned his post at Venable, but will continue to work with his Little Rock-based consultancy. He said another go at politics is not on the horizon.

“This is a big commitment — both to my son and to this firm — so it’s got my full attention, and I have no desires beyond that,” Hutchinson said.

The younger Hutchinson said the family law firm has been nearly 10 years in the making.

“Its kind of been a dream since I got out of law school, we just never really had the opportunity to do it because dad was always in politics. It was never feasible until now,” Hutchinson said. “We’re both pretty excited about it.”
