THE MORNING NEWS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The last time Kentucky beat Florida in a college football game, most of the current Wildcats weren't even born.

The year was 1986.

At that time, both teams were stuck near the bottom of the Southeastern Conference standings when Kentucky pulled off a 10-3 win in Lexington. Remember, this was pre-Steve Spurrier days in Gatorland. Since then, though, it's been all Florida. As in 21 straight wins for Florida.

"It has relevance because we never hear the end of it," Kentucky coach Rich Brooks said. "Some of our guys were never even born before the streak even started. But if we believed in those type of things, we wouldn't have been to two straight bowl games for the first time in over 50 years. So we're just working on getting past that type of negativity."

The Wildcats (5-2) visit Gainesville on Saturday looking to put an end to the streak. But it won't be easy against a fifth-ranked Florida (5-1, 3-1) team which two weeks ago dismantled LSU by 30 points in The Swamp.

Committee At Work

Ole Miss is still waiting for its first 100-yard rushing performance out of a running back this season. That doesn't necessarily mean the Rebels can't run the ball, though. Using a four-tailback system made up of Brandon Bolden, Cordera Eason, Dexter McCluster and Enrique Davis, Ole Miss still ranks fifth in the SEC in rushing yards per game.

"I'd love to have the Darren McFadden and the Felix Jones of the world where you have two running for 100 yards, but is by committee," Rebels coach Houston Nutt said. "But each has a role. And they're all getting better, and all have a significant role."

Bolden leads Ole Miss, averaging just 46.0 yards rushing per game. But combined, the four backs average 143.2 yards per contest.

"We're concerned with all four of them," Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said. "Not just one of them."

Fire 'Em Up

With his Georgia Bulldogs visiting LSU this weekend, Mark Richt was asked Wednesday the difference between getting his team fired up for a big game while making sure they didn't become too nervous.

Good question, according to Richt.

You've just got to keep an eye on it. You've got to keep an eye on your coaches, you've got to keep an eye on your players and their reaction to your coaches," Richt said. "I don't worry too much about it on a Tuesday, but as you get closer to a game you just try to gauge where everybody's' mindset is.

"You like when the guys get emotional about a game, but you don't want those emotions to stifle their mindset for the game. You just want them to channel it in the right way."

This and That

Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville was a no show on the SEC weekly teleconference due to travel conflicts. Tuberville was on his way to play at West Virginia today... Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom will not make a quarterback change, despite three interceptions thrown last week by Tyson Lee.

"I hope he's learned from them," Croom said. "But he's still going to be the starter."

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE HONOR ROLL -- WEEK 8

OFFENSE

Knowshon Moreno

Tailback, Georgia

5-11 * 207 * Sophomore

Belford, N.J. (Middletown South HS)

Moreno recorded a season-high 172 yards rushing and scored one touchdown on 23 carries in Georgia's 24-14 win against Vanderbilt. The game was Moreno's 10th 100-yard rushing effort of his career and the sophomore is now currently 10th in the Georgia career record books in rushing yards with 2,096. Moreno also had one catch last week for 10 yards against the Commodores.

DEFENSE

Eric Berry

Safety, Tennessee

5-11 * 195 * Sophomore

Fairburn, Ga. (Creekside HS)

Berry had a season-high 10 tackles, one sack and an interception returned for a touchdown in Tennessee's 34-3 win against Mississippi State. His 72-yard interception return was his fifth pick of the season and his 10th of his career. Berry now has 397 career interception yards, breaking a 60-year old SEC record held by Ole Miss' Bobby Wilson. With his five interceptions this season, Berry now leads the nation in that category.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Brett Upson

Punter, Vanderbilt

5-11 * 185 * Junior

Griffin, Ga. (Spaulding HS)

Upson averaged 44.6 yards on seven punts in Vanderbilt's 24-14 loss at Georgia, including placing the Bulldogs inside the five yard-line twice. Georgia's average starting field position was its own 20-yard line after Upson's seven punts, and the junior is now averaging 40.8 yards per punt this season.

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN

Mike Johnson

Guard, Alabama

6-6 * 299 * Junior

Pensacola, Fla. (Pine Forest HS)

Johnson did not allow a sack or quarterback pressure and did not have any missed assignments in Alabama's 24-20 win against Ole Miss last week. The Crimson Tide finished the game with 326 total yards, with 219 of those yards coming in the first half. The junior has been named offensive linemen of the week for a second time this season and becomes the third Alabama lineman to receive the honor this year.

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN

Tyson Jackson

Defensive End, LSU

6-5 * 290 * Senior

Edgard, La. (West St. John HS)

Jackson had three tackles, including two sacks, in LSU's 24-17 win at South Carolina. Led by Jackson, the Tiger defensive line limited the Gamecocks to just 39 rushing yards and only 254 yards of total offense. LSU also finished the game with a season-high six sacks. Jackson now has 18.5 sacks for his career, which is eighth highest in LSU history.

FRESHMAN

Randall Cobb

Wide Receiver/Quarterback/Punt Returner, Kentucky

5-11 * 185

Alcoa, Tenn. (HS)

Cobb scored both of Kentucky's touchdowns in the final 4:15 of the game to rally the Wildcats to a 21-20 win against Arkansas. He accounted for every yard in Kentucky's winning drive, beginning with a 14-yard punt return, then catching passes for 14 and 21 yards. For the game, Cobb had five catches for 73 yards, returned three punts for 24 yards and competed 2 of 3 passes for 45 yards.
