FAYETTEVILLE — Former Arkansas starting kicker Shay Haddock abruptly quit the team last week, a university official said Sunday after Haddock was arrested earlier in the day on two alcohol-related charges.
Haddock, 20, was arrested and booked into the Washington County Jail at 6:30 a.m. Sunday on misdemeanor charges of public intoxication and minor in possession of alcohol. He was released at 7:58 a.m. after posting a $305 bond.
Haddock’s decision to quit the Razorbacks wasn’t announced until after the sophomore’s arrest. Arkansas spokesperson Kevin Trainor was unable to give a reason for why the kicker had decided to leave the team after starting four games this season.
A message left on Haddock’s cell phone by The Morning News wasn’t returned Sunday.
The former walk-on was arrested just past midnight Sunday when officers were informed that an individual near George’s Majestic Lounge on Dickson Street was believed to be smoking marijuana, according to a Fayetteville police spokesperson.
As officers approached Haddock, he attempted to avoid them by turning and walking away, the spokesperson said. Officers found alcohol on Haddock and determined that he was under the influence.
The police spokesperson said officers noted that Haddock smelled of marijuana, but no drugs were found on him.
Haddock transferred to Arkansas after a brief stint at TCU, where he was just one of several kickers competing for playing time. But he got a chance to attempt field goals midway early this season after former Springdale High star Alex Tejada struggled with his accuracy.
In five games, Haddock had made 5-of-7 field-goal attempts, including a 44-yarder in the fourth quarter of Arkansas’ 25-22 win at then-No. 20 Auburn on Oct. 11.
He was 10-of-11 on extra-point attempts and lifted the Hogs to a 28-27 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 6 by making an extra point with 1:22 remaining.
Haddock remains second on the Razorbacks in scoring this season with 25 points.
