SPRINGDALE — Nine people in a Springdale apartment and six people in a Springdale home got rude and cold awakenings Sunday morning when police said a man rammed a sport utility vehicle into the buildings.
Springdale police arrested Arti Zebty, 25, of the Eastwood Apartments at 2200 E. Mountain Road Apt. G-204, early Sunday morning after Zebty rammed a white Dodge Durango into a wall of apartment A-104.
The vehicle “struck the apartment with such force that it broke through both the exterior and interior walls and completely entered the apartment,” said Springdale Sgt. Ed Motsinger.
The vehicle narrowly missed four adults and five children who were asleep, according to a police report.
A family of three rented the apartment and were relocated Sunday afternoon to another unit at the Eastwood complex, said Gigi Talton, the apartment manager.
Police said no one was injured. Talton said her main concern was the family’s welfare.
The vehicle caused about $20,000 in damage, police said, and Talton said she planned to call contractors early this morning to repair the apartment wall.
Another family at 2071 Garnett St. in Springdale may have to make similar repairs after Zebty allegedly rammed that house, too.
Police say Zebty still was driving the Dodge Durango, which belonged to a friend, when he drove into the Garnett Street home. Zebty then forced open the front door and started fighting with residents, police said.
Four adults and two children were asleep in the house when the vehicle struck it. Damage was estimated at $30,000 but again, no one was injured.
Police caught up to Zebty at the Garnett Street home then interviewed him.
Zebty said he had been drinking at a Springdale nightclub and still was angry about being “beat up” on Nov. 8, so he intentionally rammed the apartment with the intention of killing the male residents, according to a police report.
Zebty said he also drove through the Garnett Street house with the intention of killing the residents there. He said the men who previously beat him up lived at the apartment and the house.
Zebty was arrested in connection with two counts of first-degree attempted murder and two counts of aggravated residential burglary, all felonies; and driving while intoxicated, no driver’s license, no vehicle license and reckless driving, all misdemeanors.
Zebty was being held at the Washington County Jail as of 6 p.m. Sunday, awaiting a probable cause and bond hearing.
