A patched brick and wood floor, dark support poles and painted brick walls lend an urban feel to Art Gallery, the new home base for the artists' co-op formerly known as (and still associated with) Art Expo NWA.

The gallery, whose name is still under metamorphosis, is located at 509 W. Spring St. in Fayetteville (in the "Metro District" -- conveniently right beside The Flying Burrito ... mmm ...) and opened Nov. 7.

There are currently 12 artists in the collective showing, said Jaquita Ball, artist and manager for the gallery. "And we're always taking more artists."

"As a collective, we're not limited to a specific style of art," Ball said, so all types of artists and art lovers (and artist lovers) are welcome to enjoy the variety in the co-op.

A bright orange carved wooden fish by David Bachman hangs near a quirky close-up of a donkey, painted by Ball. A glass case designates space for jewelry. A wooden easel displays a colorful still life by Karolyn Farrell, and a black and white photograph of forsaken shoes by Diana Michelle Hausam hangs on the wall a few steps away.

Fayetteville, Springdale and the surrounding area "has such a vast amount of creative talent," Ball gushed. "People don't have to go outside of Northwest Arkansas for high-quality art."

For an initial hanging fee, Art Gallery co-op members can show about four or five works for around two months. (The next rotation of art will be in February, Ball said.) The artists then volunteer to staff the gallery (which can be way cool if you like visiting with the artists, but can also be very dangerous if you like to make snide comments -- just a friendly warning in case you have loud friends and/or dates), open from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and by appointment on Monday and Tuesday. "Because this is a collective, a lot of the artists have daytime jobs," Ball explained of the evening hours.

Membership in the co-op -- which meets periodically, "just when somebody has something come up" -- is especially good for emerging artists who would like to gain experience showing their work, Ball said. It's an "extremely valuable" asset for a community to have a venue to display locally created art. "We really need more" for all the talent around, she said.

The collective will be hosting a Day-After-Thanksgiving sale from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., when many artists will be discounting their work. For more information on Art Gallery, call 361-1211 or visit www.artexponwa.org.
