SPECIAL TO THE MORNING NEWS

GREENWOOD -- Batesville coach Dave King laughed a little when asked what it was going to take for his Pioneers to beat Greenwood today.

"Nobody's quite figured that out yet," King said. "They've got it going."

Greenwood has played in four straight 5A state championship games and won the last three. They've won 56 games during the past five seasons, including 31 at Smith-Robinson Stadium.

"They're awfully well coached," King said. "Their kids believe in the system. It feeds itself."

This year, Batesville is 10-1 with its only loss a 14-0 setback to No. 1 Helena-West Helena Central in the regular season finale that decided the 5A-East championship.

"We've watched that game five times," Greenwood coach Rick Jones said. "(Helena-West Helena) popped a couple on them, but it was an even-Steven game. Batesville played well enough to hang with them."

Batesville's offense is keyed by three-year starter Tim Hughes, who is Batesville's all-time leading rusher. This year, he has rushed 249 times for 1,620 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Greenwood quarterback Tyler Shook paces the offense and has thrown for 2,268 yards and 29 touchdowns behind an offensive line that has matured.

"We're not going to stop them, we're just going to try to slow them down," King said. "They are well-disciplined. We have to go in and match their intensity."

Greenwood has won 13 straight playoff games and 17 straight games in the month of November. The Bulldogs are 124-52 since moving into Smith-Robinson Stadium in 1978.
