JONESBORO -- Arkansas State University says more students applied for scholarships for next fall than the school has the money to honor. So, only qualified new students who applied by Dec. 1 will get their tuition money.

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Rick Stripling says there was an increase in the number of people who applied combined with a large pool of qualified applicants.

ASU Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships Terry Finney says students currently enrolled and those who have received scholarship offers won't be affected.

"This only affects the fall '09 recruitment class. Officials have been processing scholarship applications for the fall semester for months. Demand finally outstripped the available dollars," Finney said.

The only scholarships affected are those granted on the basis of ACT score or a combination of class rank and grade point.

"This is strictly a budget issue," Stripling said. "We have committed all funding designated for these scholarships. This is a time of economic uncertainty, and the Arkansas Department of Higher Education has presented proposals to reduce the cap for scholarship spending from 30 percent to 15 percent of the unrestricted Educational and General tuition and fee income. Therefore, we are limiting offers for fall '09 at this time."

School officials said transfer students are not affected. Nor are recipients of privately funded scholarships.
